MERHABA

ISTANBUL was ZESTFUL

If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.
— Alphonse de Lamartine

‘Vacation’ in it’s most vague or most detailed description is a huge understatement regarding my ISTANBUL experience. If I were to forego my blog by a one word description, ‘REVELATION’ takes the win hands down. Never in my forty-three years did I foresee a solo-meditation retreat to Istanbul to be the clear divine and define me at my core encounter. Call it a fourteen day crash course in self-evolution; it was by far the best experience of my life. I felt an unattainable inner peace. I would catch myself pinching my arm several times reassuring this wasn’t a dream, but rather a dream come true.

A warm welcome to all those who visit this blog to learn about Istanbul, read about my experience, or those planning a memorable trip to most beautiful city in the world. May the experience I share aid you in achieving what you search for as it did for me. If I can give you one advice before and after you read this blog, it would be to go with an ‘open-heart’.

My trip to Istanbul was booked as an escape from severe chronic pain that I had been suffering from almost a year long. I decided to take a big risk and visit an unfamiliar country, unknown doctor, and a culture I was completely oblivious to. Who know this would turn out to be a country I fell in love with, a doctor I pray blessings for daily, a culture that intertwined with every atom of my being and new friends that stole my mended heart and placed it back healed with an abundance of love.

Istanbul had me at ‘Merhaba.’

Embarking My Journey

Here I stand externally strong and completely oblivious to my inner strength as I embark on a journey unknown. In retrospect as I look at this image, I see a woman who fought to stay strong-willed and came home a woman strong indeed.

Traveling solo without your spouse and children is both challenging and exciting. The tremendous amount of pre-coordination for all aspects to run smoothly, the heavy emotions of missing them and especially during a vey family oriented holiday, and of course the raging fear of traveling to an unfamiliar place, for an operation with a doctor I never knew or met; all of it together was a cluster of emotions.

To the outside world a ‘smile’ on a photo may look just the same, to the individual smiling, they can feel if the emotions stop at the laughing lines or continue to veins and arteries that help pulsate that heart full of laughter.

Please read on and grow with me as I grew tremendously in what may seem like two weeks to the world but was a glimpse of heavenly retreat for Aneela K.

Istanbul'a Hoş Geldiniz

‘Welcome to Istanbul Aneela K.,’ was heard loud and clear by my heart. I wasn’t certain as to what this feeling was that was a mixture of immense anticipation and yet highly energetic curiosity. I decided to take in every step as I was literally walking. The airport was beautifully decorated. They do not celebrate ‘Christmas’ per say as it is predominantly populated by Muslims. However the country during this season was gleefully decorated as they do celebrate the coming of the New Year. As I walked out of the airport entrance, a ‘transferman’, as they are call them in Istanbul, (arranged by the hotel with payment in advance,) came up to me confirming my last name, (sir name).

Before I can confirm more details he grabs my large suitcase and starts walking, and walking, and down the escalators, and walking to the hotel shuttle pick up area. I must admit doing that walk on my own after a long flight (which by the way was wonderful by Turkish Airlines,) would have been exhausting; not to mention with me severe chronic teeth, jaw, mouth, neck, and skull pain.

Then I noticed others were following him as well. Apparently one transfer man leads mean arrivals to their shuttle. So then how was I the LUCKY one for him to push my suitcase? Was this by chance? Was it luck? Was it a coincidence?

Then pulled up my ride. A beautiful shuttle with a delightful driver. The drive was about an hour to the hotel. The driver made the ride very peaceful as I was extremely fatigued and hungry. I had no idea I was about to have the best moment of my life. As you finish the blog you will begin to feel the magic.

Hotel Amira

Istanbul had been a longtime dream unfulfilled. When I decided to go, I researched many blogs, searching for where to stay during my trip. Surprisingly this hidden gem in the heart of Sultanahmet was not in any of the blogs. For sure, Hotel Amira duley deserves it recognition for it was the golden essense of my trip. From the moment I booked this hotel online until back home to America, Hotel Amira's staff bestowed the utmost care, unwavering hospitality, and impeccable courtesy. The award-winning service made me overlook all other hotels I stayed in, and that includes all of America.  Each night I lay my head on my pillow thereafter, it’s with beautiful memories of the hotel experience provided by the staff.

My trip was due to a much-needed emergency surgery, and the staff did everything in their capacity and more to make me feel restful. It's hard to depict the best qualities because every action was unparalleled. The ample breakfast options, the exceptional breakfast, finger-licking dinner, and room service nourished by Aziz and Ug was very comforting. The accommodating soft-spoken staff at the front desk by Erkan, Volkan, Yasin, Sam, Ihan, and Sevgi the cleaning crew was a sweet, hardworking soul. The daily complimentary delicious Gözleme breakfast, and the hotel decor and ambience was intimate and magical. If you are looking for that private getaway and to be treated like a person rather than a visitor, this is your paradise. They carried our suitcases at check-in and weighed and packed them in the car at checkout, assisted our online check-in on our way home and recommended the finest places to visit for food, fun, and activities. They created reservations for us for each activity and even scheduled the PCR test in the hotel room. The staff is well knowledged and informed; ergo you can enjoy your stay to the fullest. The rooftop restaurant and view is dazzling. A breathtaking scene any morning, day or night. You can see the sea, seagulls, city, mosques, sunrise and sunset, and you can hear the call for prayer five times day. Oh my goodness, I am experiencing separation anxiety as I write this blog.

Hotel Amira should be called Home Amira. You see the city and you can almost taste the Istanbul air. The hotel itself is in a perfect location; hardly a ten-minute walk to the famous AyaSofya, Blue Mosque, Medresesi, Sultanahmet shopping, tram, and Grand Bazaar. I reminisce about my stay incredibly, their due diligence left an extraordinary place in my heart, and I feel like I met a new family. Book your stay; I promise happiness is guaranteed. A perpetual 'Thank You' to Hotel Amira staff with extraordinary gratitude for a unique trip of a lifetime.

Neriman Secen

Meet Neriman Secen. Most travelers know her as an expert tour guide; I know her as the being that made my dreams come true.

I came to know of this charming woman in July of 2016 through my cousin Nabeela who had recently visited Turkey. Due to a military coup, we canceled our trip to Istanbul. And here, Kismet had me going six years after to Istanbul without my family. So I contacted Neriman and there began our journey together. Neriman was not only professional, but she was also a terrific friend. Little did I know this would be a most divine trip.

I called this woman flat out one day, crying hysterically about my teeth, mouth, and jaw pain. She was in shock. I told her nothing about this trip is more important than locating a good dentist and restoring my life. She listened and was highly supportive.

Although it was not on the list of tour guide responsibilities, our search began. And she was the one who found me a remarkable dentist (more details to come later in the blog.) Almost every morning was spent at the clinic and touring the rest of the day. The amount of detailed history Neriman knows was astounding. Traveling with her felt like I was reading visually.

And every time I felt nervous or experienced pain, I would text her. She was always there a hundred percent. No issue was too big or too small for her; it was just something she took immediate action on—brilliant, experienced, wise, and fun.

We constructed a tentative list of locations and activities I would like to do in Istanbul, given that I had any time or strength after all my procedures and surgeries. My favorite element about Neriman is how quickly she apprehended my soul and desires. She was determined to make sure I didn’t give up. when I would say, ‘No, please, I just want to go back to the hotel to rest and recover with my medication.’ Her reply, ‘Are you sure we will not be in this area again, and I know you wanted to do this?” And so we did, and each time we did, it was hands down another sweet miracle indeed.

Thank You, Neriman, for being who you are.

Mehmet Akif Eskan D.D.S Ph.D.

I would love to present the hero/heart of my Istanbul trip Mehmet Akif. Mehmet is American Board Certified. He achieved his Ph.D. in under a year, and his thesis triumphed to the cover of Nature Immunology. He is a genius at the profession and a hard-working soul. Additionally, he holds a heart of gold.

After ten perpetuating months of intense chronic pain, exponentially increasing mental exhaustion, and a roller coaster of emotions, I flew across the country for hope.

Not only did Mehmet deliver, but he also rectified ten months of mental and emotional trauma. HE SHOWED ME A WARM WELCOME when I walked into his beautiful clinic and patiently heard my entire dental trauma. He then clarified every medical detail of what happened, where and why I felt pain, and how to initiate a recovery treatment. All in just two weeks. He was impeccable with all procedures, and I felt reborn.

Above all, he showed me value by listening patiently; even while I cried, he won my heart immediately. Many doctors I previously visited in America conveyed that I was going crazy, and it was in my head. Before Mehmet, I was desperately struggling alone for nearly a year.

We carried out many procedures in the two weeks I was there. And when I would cry in the dental chair, Mehmet would accept the time to stop and explain what he is doing. He would even give me pep talks to make me feel mentally stronger. He said, "I know you are very sensitive because of all the trauma you experienced. It's okay. Let me help you. I wish to see you pain-free." He would even tell me stories to make me feel calm. The amount of empathy and compassion this man holds is phenomenal and he has tenacious diligence to do the right thing. Allah truly blessed me to put me in his most trusted doctors' hands.

Mehmet did everything in his power to alleviate my pains and make my long-awaited dreams come true.

I desired straight teeth for decades. I am currently in the process of wearing Invisalign. I can say with assurance that I am so glad I met Mehmet. I virtually feel like he is one of my guardian angels.

A blog description of this man is a vast understatement. His knowledge, ambition, kindness is astounding; his character is of faith and truly flawless. No words can depict his existence in my life. I feel protected every day now because I know I am currently in good hands.

Thank You, Mehmet, for all and everything you did for me. You are indeed my hero. I send you a world of prayers daily. May Allah (SWT) bless you with all that you desire.

Šerefiye Cistern Light Show

The Theodosius Cistern (Greek: Κινστέρνα Θεοδοσίου, Turkish: Şerefiye Sarnıcı) is one of many ancient cisterns of Constantinople that lie beneath the city of Istanbul, Turkey. The modern entrance is in Piyer Loti Caddesi, Fatih.

Roman Emperor Theodosius II built it between 428 and 443 to store water supplied by the Valens Aqueduct. Theodosius redistributed the Aqueduct of Valens from its original supply to the Nymphaeum, the Baths of Zeuxippus, and the Great Palace of Constantinople. This redistribution led to the construction of the Theodosius Cistern.

The area is about 45 by 25 meters, and the roof is supported by 32 marble columns about 9 meters high.

Like the Basilica Cistern and the Binbirdirek Cistern, it is again open to the public has been under restoration for eight years as of April 2018.

The cistern was the first place Neriman took me after my molar extraction; I would say firstly, I had an exceptional dentist, and secondly, the cistern is entertaining. As I stood there and observed the show, I was amazed by the advancement and integration of history and technology. I was left awestruck and speechless in the end. I have never seen anything quite like that before. The light show was spectacular, not what I would have expected to see in a Cistern at all. If I had not visited this place and come to know it after the fact, it would be on my list next time. Don't miss it. Highly recommend.

Where to Buy Cistern Tickets

You can buy them at ticket windows, but it will cost you about at least 30 minutes waiting in line. And this will affect your future sightseeing calendar.

I recommend you buy your tickets online. This is the easiest and cheapest way to get tickets to Serefiye Cistern.

Ticket Price

* 30 TL at the ticket window on location

* Guided tour regular price is about €12

Kapalicarsi

More famously known as the ‘Grand Bazaar.’ Once again it was my beautiful Neriman who suggested that after such a heavy dental procedure; it would be best to ‘shop and have fun at the Grand Bazaar.

The Grand Bazaar (Turkish: Kapalıçarşı, meaning ‘Covered Market’; also Büyük Çarşı, meaning ‘Grand Market’ in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops on a total area of 30,700 m squared, attracting between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. In 2014, it was listed number one among the world's most-visited tourist attractions with 91,250,000 annual visitors. The Grand Bazaar at Istanbul is often regarded as one of the first shopping malls of the world.

I had no idea what it was or how much fun it was going to be. In retrospect, even a whole week, seven days and night would not be adequate enough to see the selection and experience so much of the culture all in one spot. Though that one spot is a conglomerate of about four thousand businesses. My search began for prayer necklaces for my daughters, prayer rugs, and Turkish lamps. We must have spent four hours there but the time just flew. Each business is so kind, they offer you Turkish tea, delights and water. Grand Bazaar is known for haggling and conforming to a negotiated settlement . Though I was not much concerned with haggling too much as I knew the Turkish Lira had dropped and these people were surviving on their business to make ends meet. But for your enlightenment if they say a thousand lira, you can surely guarantee that less than half of that would still be doable. The best action is to just walk away. No matter how much you desire it, walk away. If they can meet your price they will definitely come after you and settle. But as I mentioned earlier. Be kind. It’s okay to help the country’s economic growth. One desire on my Turkey wish list was a photo op in Turkish clothing by Turkish Lamps. My genie Neriman found this lovely Turkish Lamp business that dresses you up and takes a photo for just five Lira. Obviously its so much fun you end up purchasing quite a few. Still very affordable. Then I bought some lamps, jewelry, tea sets for my friends back home, and some souvenirs for my children and myself. I found myself saying ‘wow’ with every item. After all I had been through I must admit it was a bit of retail therapy. Although my fur coat would disagree…it just so happen to be waiting for Aneela K. ;p

Ayasofya Camii

The Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque / Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Şerifi, formerly a church, later a Museum, and now a place of worship as a mosque in Istanbul. It is among the world's most outstanding architectural achievements, famous for its massive dome, and considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture.

There lies much history behind the design of Ayasofya and the transformations it went through. For more information, please click the blue button below.

Ayasofya was a sense of achievement and validation for me. The moment I booked my ticket while still suffering from chronic pain, my affirmations began, "I cannot wait to pray for my health in Ayasofya. Allah will see how I traveled far and alone to one of his famous worship mosques to pray for my health. He will surely fulfill my prayers and guide me to full recovery." Every day my heart yearned for Ayasofya, "I am coming; I will be there soon and pray for my teeth, my family and all those who stood by my side during this chronic malpractice pain."

When I stepped foot into this mosque, a sentiment of serenity smothered every inch of my body, and I felt an instantaneous, mighty connection to Allah. I laid my right hand on my heart as my jaw dropped in awe of the magnificence of the mosque. A golden Fountain (şadırvan) for ritual ablutions in front of Hagia Sophia, copious grandeur Chandeliers, an artistic hand-painted Dome, Golden Arabic prayers, the enormous Marble structure for Sherbet, colorful Mosaic arch Windows, Calligraphic Panes, Tiles, Altar, Minbar, Sultan's Loge, Muezzin's Loge, Omphalion, The Library of Sultan Mahmud I, Private Sections ("Make sure"), Marble Cubes, Wishing Column, Gravestone of Commandant Enrico Dandolo, Viking scripture, and Gigantic Doors of Hagia Sophia. A surplus of astonishment added with most pacifying adhan (call to prayer.)

I prayed with all my heart. I felt like the blessedest being in the world for this opportunity. The video below depicts my emotions as my voice begins to quiver, my eyes twinkle with wet tears of both yearning and euphoria, and my words of trust in God.

My gratitude for this moment will never cease or grow smallish. Whenever I witness a photograph of Ayasofya, the Ayasofya souvenir on my fireplace shelf, or my memory during prayer rituals, I thank Allah for this wonder I encountered IRL.

No words do justice to its true beauty. Highly recommend it as a must-visit. If a picture says a thousand words, the IRL experience says infinite words.

I long awaited the day to pray for my Dental health in Ayasofya Camii- emotions went wild

Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı

I had been dreaming of an experience at a Turkish bathhouse. I purchased the complete package with no remorse. Little did I know that my first experience at Hürrem Sultan Hamami would be the memory of a lifetime. Even weeks later, I am delighted with the entire experience. Sultanahmet is rich in culture. However, this Hamam in the heart of Sultanahmet is a gem and a well-known part of the cultural experience.

If you want a sensation that will last forever, look no further; Hürrem Sultan Hamami is a Turkish bathhouse that will blow your mind away while simultaneously providing your body the ultimate relaxation. I had never been to a bathhouse before but had craved such an experience since 2010. Ergo I purchased the exclusive package with no remorse.

I recall walking in and instantly felt relaxed with its beautiful blue dome, dazzling water fountain, enchanting candlelit around, and the most pacifying acoustics. The Hamam staff very well executed the entire bathhouse experience. They were amicable, welcoming and the facility was also spotless.

After completing the paperwork, they guide you to a changing room.

You leave your belongings in your room that securely locks with a code you create. Then they seat you in the main lounge area and offer you water till an assistant attends to you. They offer various packages that combine luxury body baths and massages. I picked the complete package in which first they rinse, scrub, mask, and wash your body on a hot marble stone. Then you lay on a Turkish towel while they smother you in bubbles and massage you with the bubbles (allow me to add an OH EM GEE here!) I've never experienced such a relaxing sensation. After rinsing thoroughly, they seat you in a private area where they provide fruit juices and Turkish delights (alas, I could not taste them due to my teeth pain, but it didn't take away from their pampering.) Then they walk you up to the blue dome massage rooms and experience a full-body oil massage. When done, they walk you to your changing room. With specific packages, you receive a gift, usually a Turkish bath towel, shampoo, and conditioner.

I'm dreaming and counting the days when I will go back for the experience of a lifetime. Alhamdulillah, they brought my inner soul much recuperation. Especially since I went to Istanbul for surgery, they took excellent care of me. I miss them; a fine establishment indeed ‍️. Keep in mind; this statement is coming from a professional in the spa career for over 15 years.

Caferaga Medresesi

A while back, I remember securing a trip to Paris. At the time, I wanted to book a 'French Macaron Baking Class.' Alas, since we were short on time, it didn't happen. A place is known for its culture. Site seeing is one thing; experiencing the culture like a local is an entirely foreign experience—one where you get to bring back with you the fondest of memories. When I visit diverse countries, I love to educate myself with novel findings and become a new version.

'Caferaga Medresesi,' a Turkish Handcrafts Center; here, they hold various crafting classes and a cafe in the direct center of the institution. The establishment offers many learning crafts—two long-awaited desires. I chose calligraphy and pottery making. In about four hours, I learned how to begin practicing Calligraphy (not as easy as it looks, lol.) I made my first very own pottery, a dazzling cheeseboard. I am so proud of my accomplishment, and I cannot wait to serve cheese at my next get-together.

What made these classes more fun was the staff. John and Hilal welcomed me with great compassion and support. The time I spent with them felt like a small family. Practicing Calligraphy and making pottery together is a moment I will treasure forever. It is exhilarating to learn something new when your mentor is happy, fun-loving, and encouraging. This team did a fantastic job. I am grateful for the memories created with them. I had such a blast that I almost overlooked my teeth' pain. This place showed me great warmth even though it was a cold mid-December day.

The Medresesi and its people stole my heart. I will make a chai mug on my next visit, and yours truly will return as a pottery artisan.

Hidden Garden

The name of this restaurant could not be more ideal. The staff at Amira hotel phoned my room while I was dressing and mentioned he had made reservations at Garden 1897. I was rather rushing, ergo I focused on the word 'Garden.' As luck has it, we took a wrong turn and kept walking to locate this hidden restaurant. Just as we were exhausted and famished, we saw a restaurant with the word 'Garden' and exclaimed, here it is. At first glance, I considered it was not quite the ambiance my hotel recommended. Yet I was excited to experience an authentic Turkish restaurant. The place held the option of indoor and outdoor seating. I found myself fondly attracted to the ambiance, lighting, and garden feel, so we sat outside. The staff was kind, the food arrived in minutes, and it was fantastically delicious. The chicken was delicately tender. I am a fan of eating rice with chicken. The restaurant doesn't incorporate rice on its menu. So when the server carried my dish, I was happily surprised to see rice with my chicken. That's when the server informed me, "We bought rice from another restaurant nearby so that you can enjoy your meal."

Can I express a "WOW," I was duly impressed and felt special. I mentioned that I recently had an operation in my mouth, so it was nice to sit back and relax knowing very accommodating people surround me. I could not have been happier.

As I was nibbling on my delicious food, I heard a vociferous 'meow.' I presumed it was unusually close. As I glanced down to my left, this lovable cat was requesting a few nibbles as well. It was a terrific evening concoction of exemplary service, appetizing food, good company, a warm ambiance, and a perfect cute cat by my side.

So Hidden Garden was a true hidden gem, and I was delighted with the evening. We walked back to the hotel giggling hysterically. Bon Appetit! Good food makes the belly happy.

Thanksgiving at Garden 1897

This restaurant is the actual booking my reservations were made for by Hotel Amira the night before. And I had accidentally stumbled upon Hidden Garden. What a random coincidence.

Garden 1897 instantly impressed me by opening double doors for me. They walk you back to the exquisite garden and seat you as they pull out the chair. They immediately provide you with a flavorsome welcome dish of fully blown pita bread called 'Tandir Ekmek' and eggplant salad called 'Acli Ezme.' Which, by the way, was not only presentability alluring but oh what fine taste, my taste buds were thriving in pleasure. From there on, it was complete royal service. Full-on dashing smiles, refilling my glass when needed, all requests answered with, "right away, Madam." I felt like the Queen of Istanbul.

The menu was scrumptiously captivating; it was an overwhelming selection. Everything looked enticing. When I opened the menu and saw a variety of halal entrees, it was surreal that I could eat anything on the menu—another bonus for visiting a Muslim Country. Especially after my recent procedures, I was able to eat better. Every time I look at the photographs of the food I ordered, my mouth still waters. From the smell to the flavor, it was absolute perfection.

Even the manager Sahih came over to wish me well, and I conveyed to him that this night is a holiday in America where friends and family celebrate their blessings and love for having each other. And although I was distant from my family and friends, I could not have been more delighted with their splendid service and finger-licking delicious food. Even the dessert had me melting back to my hotel.

That evening, I nearly shed tears at how diligently they worked for such little gratitude when I received the bill. I immediately called Sahih and informed him that the restaurant's five-star royal service is insulted for remarkable courtesy at such a low cost. I handed him double the amount of the bill and promised him I would return and I would mention Garden 1897 in my Istanbul Blog.

Garden 1897 is an excellent restaurant and only a three-minute walk from Hotel Amira. It was a super convenient and divine experience. Such a combination of good food and outstanding service is scarce. They truly made my Thanksgiving an evening with a world of Thanks.

Selfie Bosphorus

Wow, wow, wow, and wow isn't merely enough for the incredible moments I shared with the 'Selfie Bosphorus' crew. These pictures are the one exception to 'pictures don't do justice because, quite frankly, this team went above and beyond for not only miraculous keepsake images, but the entire experience was nothing short of an idealistic fantasy.

One of my passions is organizing photoshoots when I visit various countries. Ergo, I should pack my amazing blue dress (image below with date and time), a gift for my birthday from a dear friend. I also googled a photoshoot in Istanbul, and I screenshotted a random photo (image below with date and time.) I sent it to my tour guide, notifying her I desired something traditional of this nature.

I did not further look into the photo of the young woman. I only saved it in my photos. Eventually, before leaving, I said to myself, "Whom are you kidding, Aneela? You know you are in severe pain, and you will not have the time or amenity for this dream." Ergo I unpacked my blue dress and left it at home.

After my third procedure at the dentist, I felt depleted. I had almost no makeup on and hadn't even washed my hair. All I wanted to do was go back to my hotel room and sleep. On the taxi ride home, my lovely tour guide, Neriman, mentioned, "Aneela, there is a place nearby if you want to do a photoshoot? I know you wanted that." I respectfully declined. And she assertively stated, "Are you sure? I know how badly you wanted a photo shoot. You can rest after the photoshoot. Let's just go have a look."

Lo and behold, as soon as I stepped into the building, I noticed the same screenshot photo I saved on their company wall. I immediately questioned them why they had this same photo and showed them my screenshot.

The employee responded, "That is our image; that place you took a screenshot of is our rooftop." I was beside myself in astonishment and excitement about how I landed in the exact location as my screenshot when I had never looked into it further. He then asked if I would like to see their collection of Turkish clothing. When I flipped the pages and saw my BLUE DRESS, I knew it was not a coincidence.

From there on began my transcendental moments with Onur, Murat, and the rest of the team (left to right). I changed into the blue and red dress, and the energy emitted between the team and myself was nothing short of exuberance. There was soul thriving laughter, hilarious, witty jokes, running free and fiercely, jumping with joy, and there was that innate connection with Selfie Bosphorus.

Even with little to no makeup and hair opened from last night's bun, I felt like the most beautiful being alive. This ethereal feeling is the precious gift and talent of the Selfie Bosphorus team. They work meticulously hard, with great passion, and with the friendliest smiles. You could never guess that they were all laboring in the freezing cold.

Their establishment consists of many floors and a rooftop embellished with diverse themes from Floral, Sky view, French Macaroons, Styled Turkish Lamps, and the central Bosphorus Rooftop View. Rates apply according to time, pics, outfits, rooms, and video captures. You can pick one, or you can use them ALL.

Thank you so much, Selfie Bosphorus, for the finest memories I will cherish. Surely I will be back, and I will be up to par this time, Aneela K. ready.

Taksim Camii

Although you cannot compare the magnificence of Ayasofya to any mosque, I enjoyed Taksim Camii. It was one of my top favorites. While the architecture held the beaut and differentiae of ancient times, the architecture also comprised contemporary value and craftwork. The footpaths were exquisite, constructed of marble and innumerable arches. Oh, I felt magnific and foreknew the look inside to be just as resplendence.

To no surprise, the Arabic invocations, shimmering chandeliers, the stair rail all clutched my attention at first glance. The glimmer combined with the adhan (call for prayer) grazed my heart, and I felt warm and fortunate to be able to step foot into and pray for my loved ones and myself in this gorgeous modern house of prayer. Highly Recommend.

Taksim Square

Taksim Square appeared to be very traditional, with Turkish delight shops, joyous singers, and talented musicians entertaining the streets. And it was also globalized, with similarities to what you would witness in New York City, Santa Barbara State Street, or Downtown Chicago. As I was swiftly walking down Taksim to catch the cruise, I made sure to seize a photo of the famous red tram of Istiklal caddesi ("street") that goes from Taksim square to the Tunnel, Istanbul, Turkey.

Taksim Square is loaded with a variety of shops and restaurants. It's the modern part of Istanbul and where most people socialize or hang out. I enjoyed both times I went. It's crammed during the week and on the weekend; all I can say is good luck ;p

The food hall was massive, and the water fountain in the middle was a captivating view while having dinner and drinks with friends. I loved shopping at the Turkish stores and grabbing a tea or a bite to eat at more Turkish-oriented shops. But they also had International brands such as Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Zara, and more.

The entire Taksim Square was dressed and illuminated with the holiday spirit this end-of-year season. Turkey doesn't celebrate Christmas, but they use a similar decor starting end of November to celebrate the New Year. It was charming walking around and taking in the scene of Taksim. Be sure to visit Taksim Square.

Bosphorus Cruise

What is a vacation without a shoreline cruise of its stunning city? Istanbul is a beautiful city, but seeing it from mid-water added to its breathtaking scenery. Anytime I reserve a cruise, I always prefer to ride it near sunset time; that way, you experience the best of both daylight and dusk views. If you select the public cruise, expect it to be packed. Though at a much steeper rate, you can secure a private cruise.

Keep some paper towels or napkins handy because the seats get water on them on a rainy day. While the most suitable seating is in the back of the voyage, it is just a pleasant experience from anywhere.

Istanbul is very famous for its beautiful seagulls. Many travelers carried some bread and crackers to feed the seagulls as we cruised through. I believe that was my favorite moment. I laid my hand out with some bread and hoped for Seagull to grasp it from the palm of my hands. However, they were baby seagulls, so there were still apprehensive about doing so. For sure, I can convey that pictures of this moment with seagulls do not do justice. You will have to see for yourself.

Neriman was skilled and precise in her knowledge of the essential establishments we passed on the cruise, and she would thoroughly entertain us with her historical and geographical knowings.

At dusk, the mosque and its minarets, the shops, the seagulls, the smell of scrumptious lentil soup had me wooing the city of Istanbul.

Spice Bazaar

Although I cook quite a bit, I didn't presume I would be as intrigued by the spice market. One step into the worldly famous spice bazaar had my eyes glancing at each spice not once or twice but thrice. Oh, boy, was I wrong.

The copious options didn't make it any easier. It is pretty overwhelming for someone who is not a fan of playing in the kitchen. One of the more well-known shops is HazerBaba. That is where I purchased all my goods.

To my surprise, what I considered would last me a year almost finished in a few months. The taste of organic spices does wonders for your taste buds.

You can spend hours shopping for spices without a care in the world. The market sells everything you can suppose needed or desired for the body. The employee's demeanor is accommodating and respectful.

Barbecue Spice, Biryani Spice, Paprika, Organic Saffron, and so much more. A few spice options are Mint Tea, London Tea, Detox Tea, Stomach Tea, Cold, Flu Tea, Dried Apricots, Figs, Cashews, Almonds, Pistachios, and more. I can go on and on with this list. However, I shall leave the astonished sentiments of your experience when visiting this incredibly aromatic place.

Balat

Instagram is well-known for its travel images publicized in vivid and vibrant colors on multiple official travel accounts. The bulk of followers are invariably captivated by the extraordinary vision, and the mind starts its mental inspiration to oneself, whispering, "one day I will experience it." So there was no way I was going to skip out on the vibrancy of Balat.

The town painted colorful staircases, hills, small cabins like eateries, umbrellas hanging mid-air, multicolored restaurants, and more. All these colors were filling my cup with flushed and cheerful kid-like emotions. I nearly felt as if I had compensated for some of my childhood inadequacies. We need to let go once in a while and allow our creative side to relish the hues and tints of a not your everyday kind of place.

The ambiance of Balat will free any depression with its rosiness. It's like a real-life play area. Leave all your worries behind and skip up these colorful steps or share a moment dining under multicolored lights and cushions. Step out of the norm and walk into living color.

Nişantaşı

Nişantaşı is the central shopping attraction in Istanbul for its brand name and high-end shops. Although I felt it was similar to New York City, knowing I was across the globe enhanced my shopping experience. I must admit the window detail was up to par and dressed well in the season's joy. Though I don't rely on what I own for self-confidence, and you can catch me joyfully with a ten-dollar souvenir bag, I did splurge on myself because I darned deserved it after the horrid year of health pains I endured.

So you may catch me back home with a new Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Valentino, YSL, Prada bag, or two or three… ;p

I don't spend frequently, but I release the gold mine within me when I know I deserve it, and I do it out of direct inspiration and fiercely. I don't regret a darn thread of Istanbul lingeries hugging my body daily.

Galata Tower

Aaaah nothing compares to the sensation of standing high on a tower taking in the fresh breathtaking view of one of the greatest cities in the world. Galata Tower is located between Istiklal Street and Taksim Square. Regular entrance fee: 18.50 Turkish Lira. Location: Beyoglu.

The moment I stood here for a memoir photo held great importance. I desired to view the city from the tower during sunset to witness the beauty of Istanbul at dusk with a full 360 view. Though I was in very severe facial/mouth/jaw pain, I took control of my mind, and I would say to myself, "Aneela, while you can be resting and recovering in your hotel room peacefully, you will miss out on this moment and may regret later never having the chance. Put your pain aside. Be in the present moment at this monument's incredible view and take in the experience regardless of your pain. YOLO!"

I make things look effortless because I am a strong woman. None of it was easy, though I chose to be happy during the hard times.

The Galata Tower provided excellent surveillance inside the city's walls and had crucial military importance. It was also later used as a fire detection tower during the Ottoman Empire before it was converted into a prison during the rule of Sultan Suleiman' The Magnificent'.

There is much history of Galata Tower. It would benefit from researching it before visiting. Ergo, you can thoroughly take in the significance of historical grounds, especially way up top with a sensational bird eye view.

Izaka Terrace - CVK

T'was the most magical night of the year. CVK, actually known as CVK Park Bosphorus Hotel, was highly recommended by my Dentist. He grew to understand me well in a few visits, and he was definitely on point. CVK holds a five-star rating and is located in Beyoğlu.

Izakaya Terrace, casually called CVK Rooftop restaurant, was by far the most glamorous night of my year. From the moment I arrived at the pristine marble and iron structured hotel with a magnificence twirling staircase and CVK written in smoldering gold. I felt that lavish wind hug my inner soul. Up the elevator I went, which by the way, is the only elevator I've seen with a chandelier. As the door opens to the staff of Izake Terrace, they welcome you and walk you to your table.

We reserved a table before sunset to appreciate the city in broad daylight, gorgeous twilight, and enchanted evening. Win-win.

I popped on my new Turkish dress and accessorized it with a pair of Pakistani earrings that were roaring to use finally.

All was perfect, almost too good to be true, yet it was my new reality.

The city looked so heavenly divine as the sunset amongst fifteen million people. Istanbul's seagulls soaring in the sunset scene induced my heart to be in awe of this carpe diem moment.

Our server Omër presented us with an incredibly warm welcome. He had quite the pizazz. We conversed as if we had known each other for a while. As I sipped my mouthwatering pomegranate mojito, Omër wished me well with my recovery and departed as his shift was over. We were then greeted by our new waitperson Ozgür. Another lovely server with nothing but charisma and smiles. The service at Izaka Terrace, for sure, was a pampering charm. With extravagant services, decadent food you can inhale, and a view to die for, what more can you ask?

As I sat by the window gazing at the marvelous city, all I could feel was, "Wow, Allah, thank you so much for bringing me to Turkey, to a genius Dentist, a fantastic tour guide turned into a good friend. And all the experiences I sought thus far. Though tonight, my heart is leaping and dancing in this joyous moment.

The restaurant played live music, very classical indeed. We must have been there for nearly four hours, and not a soul questioned us. Very relaxed and delightful evening it was. It was a night of authentic celebrations. We celebrated my pain mystery not only finally being discovered but also taken care of in great hands. We additionally applauded new friendships, and last but not least, we honored my dream come true - a trip to my favorite city in the world, Istanbul.

I recall hustling to get ready. I had no spare moment to see my drip properly. As our dinner came to an end, I proceeded to the ladies' room for a quick lipstick refreshing, and what did I see in the mirror- Oh my goodness - I saw a woman I had not seen in a year or possibly ever. I saw a woman who no longer must cry in pain and survived the agony. I saw a woman strong enough to journey the world to proclaim her right to happiness. I saw happiness, glamour, and most of all, a brand new ravishing smile. I walked about my table with the utmost vainglorious strut of my life, and I damn well earned it.

Ortaköy

Another exhilarating moment as we come to nearly the end of my procedures and surgeries. Today was the final procedure with my Dentist before returning home as a new woman. It was also a Friday, and Fridays are holy days in Islam. We must perform Friday prayers. My Dentist recommended I try Ortaköy Camii. He said I would enjoy the area, and I could see the mosque and perform my prayers.

What a scene; it was momentous for me. I began twirling in rapture by the Bosphorus sea, conveying my gratitude for achieving victory. After many twirls (if you know me, I am NOT exaggerating), I went to Ortaköy Camii, said my heartiest prayers of appreciation, and requested numerous blessings for my Dentist. For he shall forever be my hero.

I remember praying on the string of beads left by the corner window with a view of the gorgeous sea and a ray of sunshine sparkling on it as if it were glorifying the moment with me. I then prayed for my loved ones and gave charity in the name of all those mentioned above.

Ortaköy was an entertaining area. Many vendors stood side by side, all marketing the number one Istanbul staple, kumpir (baked potato). Kumpir's are baked potatoes where you can add practically any kind of vegetables to them. After getting your warm Kumpir, you can take a short walk to the Bosporus and watch the great view of Istanbul and the Asian side.

I figured why not try it, and I am glad I did. I topped my potato with sour cream, corn, carrots, and salsa. It is filling and enough for two to share. I ate by the glimmering sea and took in the moment.

There was a bazaar by the Camii, so I strolled around and purchased some prayer jewelry for my girls. I caught my eye on a vendor with a laser machine as I walked. He mentioned I could laser anything on any product. I customized each of my daughter's names on a necklace and two key chains with my favorite Islamic prayer. I also purchased an Istanbul journal for my youngest and myself and lasered our names on it.

Ortaköy is for a fun day out. I loved my prayer, the sea, the food, and the souvenirs. Highly recommend.

Bebek

Guess who sailed a boat on the Bosphorus!!! Yes. Yours Truly finally took control of which direction she was headed, and there was no better way to commemorate the moment than to experience something new like sailing a boat.

The weather was gorgeous, and I had just pampered my tummy with the most scrumptious raspberry-rich chocolate cake with a side of Chai Latte. Both of which were devoured with no fuss. Try La Sirene in Bebek.

Keynote, grabbing a taxi from Bebek is nearly impossible. Be sure to have a tram card handy or extra Liras you are willing to expend as an upgrade to getting home in traffic.

By the restaurant, there were a few sailboats at the dock. I requested the sailor for a ride. I was surprised and excited when he offered to let me take control of the wheel in the middle of the sea. I spent an hour on the sailboat enjoying the sea, the view, the wind, the music, and my new freedom to do whatever I desired.

Bebek is a great place to walk and chill with friends. They have a boardwalk with many restaurants and shops right off the sea. I truly enjoyed Bebek. It felt like a much-needed release—also an excellent recommendation by my Dentist. By now, my Dentist had almost become my tour guide as well. But I think it was the fact that he knew me well by now and knew what would thrive me joy.

Bebek Highly recommend it.

Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque in Istanbul, also known by its official name, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is an Ottoman-era historical imperial mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey. It was constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed. A functioning mosque also attracts large numbers of tourist visitors.

Alas, Blue Mosque was under restoration my entire trip till my last day. It was finally open for prayer time and only for Muslims who wished to pray Zuhr in the Mosque. I was happy I had a chance to pray in the Blue Mosque before leaving the country. I swear I felt this was another gift of love from God.

Much of the Mosque indoors was covered, but it was undoubtedly very distinctive and eye-catchy from what I did see. Many shades of blue with gold invocations was just a wonder to witness. Even a small glimpse was enough to fulfill my wish.

It's located just a few hundred feet from AyaSofya.

Hafiz Mustafa 1864

DECADENT is far underrated for this aphrodisiac dessert shop. I cannot believe this gem of a sweet shop was discovered on my last day in Istanbul. Oh my goodness, I was drooling, involuntarily exhaling, and making the most uncomfortable sounds while staring at all the magnificent options. If and when I return, I will be sure to visit every night before bed for a pleasurable sleep in paradise.

This fantastic establishment was terrific and shown to me by my dear friend and a great Chef, Manager Aziz. I purchased a customized box for some friends and myself. I can't wait to go back with zero diet restrictions.

Highly Recommend.

City of Cats

Who else made this vacation 'PURRRRR-FECT'? The cats of the city. Yes, that is correct. I encountered my first cat while dining at Hidden Garden on my first day in Istanbul. As I was eating my dinner, I heard the most profound 'meeeeeoooowww' of all time. My first dinner date was with a cat and an Istanbul Cat, to top it off. 'Oh Cat,' was I lucky or what?

*In 2019, The New York Times estimated that in Istanbul alone, a megacity of 15 million people, there are thought to be 130,000 dogs and 125,000 cats roaming free.

Why so many cats? Per a 2017 article in the Economist:

Turkey is not unique among predominantly Muslim countries for honoring its cats, considered ritually clean animals in Islam. In the hadith, the collected sayings, and actions of Muhammad, there are numerous examples of the Prophet's fondness for cats. By one account, Muhammad cut off his sleeve when he had to rise for prayers not to disturb a feline that had curled up on his robe for a nap. In another tale, the pet cat of Abu Hurayrah (literally "father of the kitten") saved Muhammad from an attack by a deadly serpent. Muhammad purportedly blessed the cat in gratitude, giving cats the ability to always land on their feet. Cats were considered guardians in other respects for the Islamic world: they defended libraries from destruction by mice and may have helped protect city populations from rat-borne plagues.

Looking through history books about Islam, many mention the Prophet's love of felines, and while variations on the preceding stories exist, the overarching affection for cats has been consistent.*

As I toured around the city, I witnessed cats everywhere. I noticed them in buildings, restaurants, tram stations, subway, motorbikes (one of my favorites), and practically all over the city. It was the most darn cutest scene. It was a beautiful feeling.

Istanbul residents take good care of their cats. This city's love for people is amazement, but the love for these cats was pure amazement. They held cat shelters and tiny homes every few blocks and a bowl of food laid out.

Strolling the streets of Istanbul, you will notice numerous containers by the flanks of facilities and inconspicuous food rations doled out by its residents.

While the cats are not embraced formally, they are taken care of by no one and everyone, a massive congregation network of cat management.

Fine Dine Istanbul

I SCREAMED so LOUD when I came to know of Fine Dine Istanbul. It is a rooftop restaurant with a view of BOTH AyaSofya and Blue Mosque, located five minutes' driving distance from Hotel Amira.

The night I returned home from dining at CVK, I conveyed to the staff how amazing the dinner was. And that I am the greatest fan of rooftop restaurants as they are so dreamy for me with their enchanting view of the city all lit up. The staff then informed me of Fine Dine Istanbul and even notified me that a free shuttle came to pick and drop us off. I could not believe it.

My first night there was after CVK, and I returned three times as it was my final few nights.

Visiting mosques are a passion for me. To view both famous mosques in one scene was utterly breathtaking. The service once again was impeccable, the food was flavorful, and the view had me head over heels. The architecture of the mosques itself from the veneer was just extravagantly stunning. The illumination added to its marvelous beauty; I could stare at this view all day. I experienced separation anxiety. I must have taken a hundred photos.

When the adhan (call for prayer) came, I nearly froze in sheer joy, hearing two adhans in sync. If I had the opportunity, this moment alone would have me purchase a home in Sultanahmet.

My trip ended with this beautiful sight of the city on three consecutive and delightful nights. Thank you, Fine Dine Istanbul, for this view that makes me sleep better. I look forward to seeing it again.

A must-see. Highly Recommend.

Dr Oguzhan Oguz

One might suddenly find oneself perplexed by the state of their sinuses and allergies upon awakening. After enduring months of anxiety in the states,  Dr. Oguz came with glowing recommendations. He enlightened me about the possibility of unforeseen changes and urged me to promptly undergo a scan to validate his suspicions, which he proved to be remarkably accurate. Initially, I hesitated to inconvenience myself with a hospital visit for a scan while on vacation. Looking back, however, he has become a true hero in my eyes. Rest assured, he is a renowned Rhinoplasty Surgeon, and I hope to have the opportunity to rectify a childhood nasal injury under his skilled hands in the future.

His office is so intriguingly designed and his office staff is even more dedicated to empathy and kindness. The entire facility gives a calm feel and a sense of assurance that there is no one better than Dr Oguz himself.

Importants Tips & Suggestions

  1. Bring lots of Liras. They are handy as tips for servers, taxis, cleaning crew, staff, and even some in need.

  2. Don't lose patience. Finding a taxi that won't triple the price fare is hard, but you will find an honest driver if you keep trying. I would allocate about ten minutes before your appointed times.

  3. Research the geography of Istanbul so you can maximize your fun and minimize travel time.

  4. Pack lightly. It is effortless to shop crazy in Istanbul. Especially with their Turkish lamps. You will need space in your suitcase to return.

  5. Be cautious of tourist hagglers who sell imposters and con you for a high price. Just go to the Grand Bazaar for a better deal.

  6. Have Fun.
